The Swallow was designed by Tom Thorncroft as a potential replacement for the Olympic Star class.

The Swallow was used in 1948 Olympics held in Torbay at which Great Britain won the Gold medal, but the boat never became popular outside the UK. Of 94 boats built, around 40 remain active with fleets at Itchenor, Chichester Harbour and Aldeburgh, Suffolk.

The National Swallow class first competed at Cowes Classics Week in 2014 and return each year bringing boats from the Itchenor fleet. They compete for the Aitken Challenge Cup which was won in 2015 by Tony Glover's Darter.
